They say time flies once your child starts school. Well I would have to agree. C has been in Kindergarten for 1 month now. I can hardly believe it. Most mornings she is up and dressed before I am even awake.
She will usually come wake me and tell me it is time to get up for school. I am so lucky that C still lets me pick out her clothes. I know lots of 5 year olds that don't. I always pick out her clothes the night before and hang it on her closet door. Saves tons of time in the morning.
(I somehow missed the E on Elementary!)
We eat breakfast and I get ready and we are out the door by 7:30 am every morning. It is still too hot to walk to school. I use to park and get out and walk her to the gates. But now we use the drop off lane. But only in the mornings.
She is so good about letting me take her pictures in the morning. In fact some days she even requests it.
Especially if she is sporting a cool hair-do like "meatballs".
This particular morning I was trying to take her picture and she saw a boy friend and called out, with a little wave "Hi Dalton!" He told her hi and then she ran off to walk with him before I could even get a hug or tell her bye. Her teenage years flashed before my eyes!!
Most days I dress her pretty comfy as it is still so hot. And they have recess outside 2 times a day. Plus 2 days a week she has to wear sneakers for P.E. But every once in a while she wears a dress.
Pick up after school is not fun. There is a car pick up line BUT it is awful and takes forever. I have heard friends say they wait up to 20 minutes after school lets out to pick up their kids.
Which is a long time as all the hallways in her school are outside. And all the kids have to stand in the blazing hot sun and wait until their car pulls up. My elementary school in Miami was this way. All the halls were outside, since it never got really cold. But it sure stinks big time in the summer. And yes we are still in summer until mid-October here!
So I take one for the team. School does not get out until 2:15pm. But I arrive at school at 1:55 to try to find a parking space close by. There are about 30 spaces to parallel park in and they go fast! If you don't get one of those you end up walking so far to your car. I usually take a drink for myself and C and read for about 15 minutes in the air-conditioned car until I have to walk to get her.
Only 1 day since school started has it been cool enough for me to walk from the house to get her. She was happy to walk the first 2 blocks.
But after that she didn't want to walk anymore. I guess we will wait until next year when she can ride her bike. Apparently 4 blocks is too far to walk after a day of Kindergarten.
One day last week I joined her for lunch. You can see her in the lime green top and orange shorts.
This was the first day Kindergartners were able to buy hot lunch. It was pizza day so I let her buy. That is her cute friend Emari. The boy is someone in her class.

The pizza was not what she expected. It was on french bread and she did not like it. Too much bread she said. She also got coleslaw and pureed strawberries. Even though she told me she did not like either of them I was very proud of her for trying them.
We will stick to lunch from home for now. And try hot lunch again in a few weeks.
I got to attend a curriculum night for her class. I was happy to see that the picture C drew for Mrs. Wienke was hanging proudly in the classroom.
Mrs. Wienke's classroom was decorated so cute and was full of the students work.
I got to sit at her table. Each month they move to a new table to sit with different classmates. Emari is at her current table. Along with 2 other good friends. I asked Mrs. Wienke if their table is always talking. But she surprisingly told me that they were quiet.
C will be writing in a journal throughout the school year. I was able to write a short note on the first page. If I had more room I would have wrote more. But I am sure C loved it.
As of now C's favorite subject is recess. At recess they play "jail", football, hula hoop and tag. She LOVES playing with all her new friends. Her favorite friends in class are Sophia, Emari, Avery T., Addie and Bjorn. They are reviewing the alphabet and learning how each one sounds. Her writing is improving a lot. Lots of times on the weekend she will tell me she wants to write. She is beginning to learn how to read. I am so happy that she loves school, her friend, learning and Mrs. Wienke. I am so proud of her. I look forward to all she will learn and know by the end of this year!
